The bit no one really says out loud about running a business through the school holidays

The holidays weren’t unproductive. Not exactly.

But the thinking was fractured.

We’re just out of Easter. And chances are, you’re sitting back down at your desk this week with a slightly strange feeling — part relief, part guilt, part “where on earth do I start.”

The holidays weren’t unproductive. Not exactly. But the thinking was fractured. You were half in your business and half in your life, and neither got your full attention. You caught up on emails between trips to the park. You had an idea in the car and couldn’t do anything with it. You started three things and finished none of them.

Sound familiar?

Here’s why…

Running your own business means every decision sits with you. The pricing. The pipeline. The offer you’ve been circling for weeks. Whether to say yes to that associate role or hold out for something that actually fits where you’re trying to go. Whether to show up on LinkedIn this week or wait until you have something worth saying. It all lives in your head, and when your focus is fractured for two weeks, it just stacks up even more.

Something else happens too…

The inner critic gets louder. The comparison kicks in. You notice what everyone else seems to be doing and quietly wonder if you’re falling behind. You look at the bookings in the diary, the money in the bank, the targets you set yourself for this year, the offer you wanted to launch, and you start comparing it to all the noise you see from everyone else’s social media highlights reel, wondering if you’re going to have to go back to working for someone else after all.

That’s the bit that doesn’t make it into the business books.

The slide into saying yes to low-paid associate work because it feels safer than backing yourself. Stopping posting because it feels like shouting into the void and the algorithm has decided you don’t exist. The idea you were genuinely excited about still sitting in your notes three months later, not because you can’t do it, but because your confidence has been slowly eroded by weeks of scattered thinking and half-made decisions.

It’s not a motivation problem. It’s not even a strategy problem. It’s what happens when you’re trying to think clearly without the space or the support to actually do it well. This is how brilliant businesses quietly stall. With a slow accumulation of deferred choices.

And it’s all coming round again, with another half term in May, and the year accelerating towards the 6-weeks summer holidays faster than you can eat your favourite easter egg!

For many of us, that summer window is quieter on the organisational side — training doesn’t tend to get booked in August. Which means, with a bit of forward planning, the school holiday diary might actually allow something different.

How about a day, properly protected, away from the noise, with someone who knows how to help you think?

A full day, built entirely around you and what matters most right now. A day to get everything out of your head, make the decisions you’ve been deferring, and leave with a clear sense of what you’re doing and why.

I’ve been giving this one a LOT of thought over the Easter break, in between my demolition project (IYKYK). More details coming soon. But if you don’t want to wait, you know where I am 😉
