Just because you can doesn’t mean you should

Capability has a quiet gravity – and it often pulls more towards you than you ever consciously chose.

This piece explores the moment where being able to carry something becomes very different from deciding you want to.

How capability becomes a quiet magnet for responsibility

When you can carry things, people let you.

The person who can hold the complexity ends up doing exactly that. The one who can keep the conversation steady becomes the place where tension settles. The person who can make the call becomes the one the decision returns to.

Once you notice the pattern, it becomes hard to miss. Capability has a kind of gravity. Responsibility gathers around the person who seems most able to hold it.

The invisible work women have been doing for decades

For many women, that dynamic didn’t begin at work. By the time we are approaching our fifties, most of us have spent years carrying far more than a job description suggests.

Careers and businesses have been built, certainly. But alongside that sits the quieter, largely invisible work of keeping life running: households organised, relationships tended, calendars remembered, the emotional temperature of the people around us constantly monitored.

It rarely gets named. It’s simply what gets done.

Why the question isn’t capability — it’s choice

Over time, capability becomes second nature. You become the person who can steady a situation, hold multiple perspectives, and think things through. And that capability travels with you everywhere.

From the outside, this looks like trust. But trust and responsibility are not the same as ownership.

The issue isn’t whether you can handle it.
It’s whether it’s yours to carry.

Where the conversation opens up

Recognising that moment — the point where something quietly lands with you — creates space for a different kind of leadership.

Those are the conversations I spend a lot of time in through my Wing Woman work. Not because women need someone to take things off their hands, but because thoughtful leaders benefit from having somewhere to put the thinking down and look at it properly.

If this has brought something you’re currently carrying into clearer focus, that’s exactly the kind of conversation Wing Woman exists for.
